Service Design in Health Research Workshop

Overview

This interactive workshop is designed for research team members looking to improve health interventions using design thinking. Participants will explore frameworks and methods to refine the development of health interventions, and learn about design heuristic techniques and assumption mapping to identify gaps in their research framing and methodology. This session will also provide participants with strategies for improving research design and fostering meaningful collaborations with underserved communities, especially diverse and underrepresented groups for shorter projects. All members of the research team are welcome to join.

This is a collaboration between the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA) and the Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR).

Objectives

By the end of this session, attendees will:

  1. Learn about design methods and frameworks, including:
    1. Ecosystem, assumption and critical empathy mapping
    2. Jobs-to-be-Done analysis
    3. Grounded theory
    4. Reflexive analysis
  2. Apply these methods and frameworks to refine a research question or project idea related to psychosocial, behavioural or structural health interventions
  3. Identify needs, opportunities and potential approaches to interdisciplinary and community collaboration in addressing the refined project idea

Application

The workshop is open to 24 attendees with a research background relevant to one of CIHR-IMHA or CIHR-IHSPR’s mandated areas. Eligible applications will be accepted in order of submission (first come, first served). Applications will be reviewed by CIHR-IMHA staff to ensure:

  • Applicant is involved in a health research project in Canada
  • Responses to the questions are relevant to the IMHA or IHSPR mandate.

Successful applicants will be notified by June 18, 2025.

Please note that the workshop will be held in English. We encourage you to regularly check the CIHR-IMHA website for updates on the next workshop offering in the Emerging Leader series.
